Our Summer College Program in Winchester might just be exactly what you are looking for; at the college you will receive intense English instruction with personal mentoring from a tutor. Of course during class, intercultural activities with your teacher, project work, and recreational activities only English will be spoken. You will learn a lot, but together with your new friends from lots of different countries you will also have tons of fun.
The charming city of Winchester is an appealing place to do just that. The former English capital offers not only a renowned university, but also many historical places such as the famous cathedral or the legendary chair from King Arthur’s round table. Lastly the historic city center offers cozy little cafes and shops, creating the perfect balance to an intellectually stimulating day.

The campus

Our Summer College can be found tucked away in the gorgeously green and hilly university campus. The IP Ocean Lounge, where you will be able to meet friends from all over the world and where most of our activities take place, is situated in the heart of the campus. The IP Fruit 'n' Fit - Corner offers water, tea and fruit all day long four our guests.
In addition to this fun- filled international atmosphere, the campus offers sport fields for soccer, volleyball and other games.
Public launderettes with coin-operated washers and dryers as well as public phones and internet can also be found on campus. A safe is not available in the centre; however you will receive a key to lock your room.

The Winchester language school

Our partner school, Europa School of English, is member of English UK the world's leading language teaching association. All lessons take place on the campus.
Our language courses are attended by students from all over the world and have been designed specifically for young people who are visiting a foreign country for a short time period. Maximum class size is 15. All teachers are native speakers and qualified to teach English as a foreign language. Course material is provided and has been carefully selected and compiled for originality, content, and appeal to young people. It is sure to help you improve your English quickly.
You’ll take a placement test on arrival, which will determine your course level. The following levels are catered for: intermediate (B1), upper intermediate (B2), and advanced (C1). At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate indicating your language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference Levels.

The Summer College Course

Language learning continous after lessons

The Summer College Course works on your comprehensive understanding of the English language. You will have 35 lessons per week consisting of English language classes as well as cultural experiences and trips followed by a tutorial. From Monday to Friday you will receive four lessons in the mornings in a group with a maximum of 15 participants. Your teacher will focus on areas of grammar, listening and reading comprehension, communication, and text writing. On three afternoons each week you will have five additional lessons in small groups with a maximum of 10 participants. In the first two units your teacher will offer instruction on topics such as English for Academic Purposes, English & Culture, and English & History. After the lessons your group will leave the classroom to discover Winchester together. Possibilities include a city tour, visiting the Winchester Cathedral, and having a cream tea during the program. In this way you’ll be practically and resourcefully learning about English culture and society.
At the end of the afternoon there is a tutorial. Under the supervision of your teacher you will work on a small presentation covering your group’s cultural activities. Additionally you have the possibility to make a personal decision about your own capabilities and receive individual tutoring.

Accommodation and Meal Plan

Residence: Live and socialize on campus with your fellow students from all over the world! At King Alfred Campus, you will stay in study blocks with self-contained flats of six to eight single rooms. You may choose to stay in an en-suite single room or in a standard single room with a shared toilet and shower facilities on each floor. You’ll receive full-board accommodation which includes breakfast, a warm lunch, and warm dinner. All meals are taken in the self-service cafeteria on campus.

Activity Programme

Three cultural activities per week are organized and supervised by your teacher. In addition to this, we offer a supervised activity programme: Welcome Meeting, Town Walk, Town Quiz, Campus Sports (soccer, volleyball, basketball, etc), Workshops (Dancing, Arts & Crafts, Health & Beauty, etc), Film Night, Open Stage, Theme Nights, Open Air, Karaoke, Scavenger Hunts, and International Parties.
Every Summer College programme includes two half-day trips and one full-day trip to Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Salisbury, New Forrest, London or Brighton.

Special: London Overnight Trip

As one day is not enough for a city like London, our overnight trip gives you more time to take in the sights.
On Saturday morning you will get an early breakfast and a packed lunch for the day. You will arrive in London around lunch time. Our supervisors will organize several sightseeing and shopping walks for you. In the evening you will all go for a warm meal together before making your way to the youth hostel where you will spend the night. The modern hostel has multi-bedded rooms with ensuite toilet and shower facilities. Breakfast on Sunday morning and a packed lunch are provided. You have several more hours to explore London before leaving the city on Sunday afternoon. Once you have returned to your centre, you will get a light evening meal.

This special is not included in the programme but can be chosen at the time of booking as an upgrade. Please be aware that booking this special prevents you from attending the scheduled full-day trip.

Supervision and Welfare

Our friendly and helpful International Team with staff members from England, Germany, France, Spain, Russia, and other countries will run a fully supervised activity programme and guarantee round the clock supervision.
The members of our team have been carefully selected for their responsible and caring attitudes as well as their fun-loving and outgoing personalities. They are the people you can turn to at any time for assistance.
Your safety and welfare is our top priority: there is one supervisor responsible for 15 students.

Transfers

Transfers are not included in the price, but transfers can be provided as an additional service from/to London, Bristol, and Southampton. On the day of arrival our Meet & Greet Service will be waiting for you at the exit area of customs and will take you directly to your course centre. On the day of departure, you will leave Winchester in time to allow for check in at the airport. Please don’t hesitate to book our Unaccompanied-Minors-Service if you're looking for a supervised check-in. If you book an Unaccompanied-Minors-Service with your airline, please be sure to request our Unaccompanied-Minors-Service as well.

We also offer a Low-Budget transfer from/to London Heathrow. Fly into Heathrow airport between 10.00 and 17.00 and go to our meeting point in Terminal 5. There will be a member of staff to welcome you. Our coach shuttle will depart from Heathrow at approximately 18.00. On the day of departure you will be dropped-off at Heathrow about 12.00 - for flight departure after 14.00.
